Network connectivity takes spotlight in new Internet Inside No. 22

Communications and telecommunications form the backbone of the internet, which is why they are addressed in some way in every issue of this magazine. However, the term most frequently used is connectivity, as it better captures the dynamic nature of network interaction within this ecosystem.
Connectivity is a more complex and multifaceted concept than merely communication, which is precisely why it remains a topic of continuous discussion.
The magazine opens with two articles: The Impact of Edge Computing on the Internet and The Evolution of Connectivity in the Age of Zero Trust. The authors explore how connectivity has evolved from the conventional internet of the 1990s to the present days. What is remarkable is not just the immense progress this communication ecosystem has made in the past 30 years, but also the fact that throughout these years, this development has occurred without any formal plan or management.
The magazine features a collection of engaging articles in its recurring Technology in Detail section, as well as in a newly introduced Infrastructure of Connectivity segment. Among these is an abridged version of a RIPE NCC report, The Role of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in the Middle East. The report examines the evolution of internet exchange in the region, highlighting the importance of supporting local peering for digital economy development, etc.
In the Education and Science section, Pavel Khramov offers a concise overview of the internet identifier system and its role in connectivity. In Winemaking and Digital Wine, Sergei Zimin draws parallels and highlights differences between telecommunications and viticulture, complete with recommendations for IT professionals on how to appreciate wine properly.
This year marks two big anniversaries. Yelena Voronina and Yevgeny Morozov reflect on the long journey and explore the future of MSK-IX, which celebrates 30 years. The first Cyrillic domain .рф marks its 15th anniversary on May 12, 2025. Поддерживаю.РФ Project Director Maria Kolesnikova shares insights on the current standing of Cyrillic domains within the global DNS landscape.
The magazine’s regular sections continue to evolve. In Politics, Madina Kasenova examines connectivity through the lens of regulatory efforts and policy initiatives in Russia and internationally.
