During a series of business events held as part of the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), GROUP BALANCE hosted a discussion session titled Investing in Your Own Business. Among the participants was Yevgeny Morozov, CEO of MSK-IX, who dedicated his presentation to the critically important topic of cybersecurity amid rapid digital transformation.

In his address, Yevgeny Morozov provided an in-depth analysis of internet exchange points (IXPs) and the fundamental principles of internet operations, making complex technical concepts accessible to a broad audience.

He placed particular emphasis on cybersecurity challenges, specifically protection against DDoS attacks, the frequency and intensity of which have increased exponentially over the past three years. Citing analytical data, Morozov highlighted that while the fintech and public sectors have significantly strengthened their security systems, small and medium-sized businesses, logistics, and retail sectors remain the most vulnerable.

“Today, cybersecurity must be approached proactively and integrated into the culture of business operations. Malicious actors constantly seek the path of least resistance, scanning the internet for unprotected systems. The consequences of such attacks extend beyond immediate financial losses from downtime – they inflict severe reputational damage, directly eroding customer trust and, consequently, hindering business growth. The speed of response and the availability of backup infrastructure are pivotal in minimizing these losses,” warned Morozov, stressing that risks must not be underestimated.

MSK-IX, a company with a 30-year history that began as a traffic exchange point, now actively develops a comprehensive ecosystem of platforms, offering services to organizations across diverse business sectors. A key component of this ecosystem is solutions for safeguarding mission-critical operational traffic.

Recognizing clients’ growing demand for information security, the company introduced a unique offering: closed communities for secure exchange of critical operational traffic. Though such traffic constitutes merely 1 percent of total volume, it is indispensable for business continuity, particularly in financial transactions or roaming between electronic document interchange (EDI) operators.

A defining feature of these communities is their complete technical isolation from the public internet, coupled with a moderator overseeing participant composition and traffic type. As a successful case study, Morozov cited MSK-IX’s implementation of a project for EDI operators, ensuring reliable roaming between them.

Concluding his remarks, Yevgeny Morozov reiterated the imperative of proactive cybersecurity measures, noting that reputation and customer trust are the bedrock of any business, forming the foundation for financial success and long-term development.
