MSK-IX at TLDCON 2025: from anniversary to the future of Runet

In his address, MSK-IX CEO Yevgeny Morozov summarized the company’s 30-year journey and outlined strategic priorities for the future.
This year, MSK-IX celebrates its 30th anniversary. Over the past three decades, it has evolved from a classical internet exchange point into one of the largest multiservice platforms, now ranking among the top ten globally. Without resting on its achievements, MSK-IX continues to develop its infrastructure by establishing local nodes in every federal district.
One of the company’s primary development vectors is its global DNS cloud, which is used by the administrator of the .RU and .РФ top-level domains, as well as by government entities and corporate clients. The system operates under constant challenges, including DDoS attacks and sudden traffic surges.
“Our main task is to enhance the infrastructure’s fault tolerance. To achieve this, we are consistently increasing the number of nodes in our network. In 2025, we launched a DNS node in Serbia and are expanding our presence in Kazakhstan and Belarus. This prepares us for any challenges and ensures compliance with the highest standards of reliability and professionalism,” stated Yevgeny Morozov.
Dmitry Kovalenko, DNS Solutions Architect at MSK-IX, presented detailed data confirming a high degree of traffic localization. According to his research, over 50 percent of all DNS traffic to national domains hosted on the company’s infrastructure is handled by servers within Russia, while 90 percent of Russian traffic is contained within the country.
“Our study revealed a high level of traffic localization, which is a key factor for ensuring performance and security. We continue to develop the network and launch new nodes – specifically, in 2025, we deployed nodes in Serbia and Kazakhstan to further enhance the fault tolerance and efficiency of the DNS cloud,” noted Dmitry Kovalenko.
Finally, Pavel Khramtsov, Project Scientific Supervisor at the Indata Foundation, discussed the technological foundation enabling the company to respond swiftly to challenges. He delivered a presentation on anomaly detection in data using statistical methods, emphasizing their importance for maintaining service stability.
“Effective system monitoring and rapid response to incidents critically depend on using modern analytical tools. The application of diverse statistical methods allows us to detect anomalies in data arrays and take timely action to ensure the continuous and stable operation of our services,” emphasized Pavel Khramtsov.
The TLDCON 2025 conference, organized by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, was held in Kaliningrad on September 15–16, 2025. The event annually brings together administrators and registrars of country-code domains from the CIS, Central, and Eastern Europe. This year’s program featured both traditional topics, such as cybersecurity and DNS abuse, and new themes, including workforce training and quantum communications.
